An Auckland adrenaline junkie has begun an attempt to break the world bungy jumping record for most jumps within 24 hours.
Mike Heard made his first jump from the AJ Hackett Bungy pod under the Auckland Harbour Bridge at 6.05am.
He is hoping to crack the record of 101 bungy jumps by 3pm, and has set a personal target of 150 jumps.
The current record for the most bungy jumps in 24 hours is held by South African Bill Boshoff who performed 101 bungy jumps in 14 hours and 23 minutes at Bloukrans River Bridge, South Africa, on May 10 2002.
Heard spoke with NZPA briefly between his fifth and sixth jump and said so far everything had been going smoothly, except he kept dunking his head in the harbour.
His record attempt will be used to raise funds for the Cure Kids charity, and so far has raised $2500.
It was not enough though, and Heard said they hoped to raise at least $30,000.
Heard's love of bungy jumping began five years ago, and hasn't dimmed.
"Once you get over the fear it's really really enjoyable - it's quite a free feeling."
However, he predicted he would be bored of the jumping by about midday today.
Bungy New Zealand owner Henry van Asch said it was great Heard had recognised how "fantastic bungy is for the soul".
"Our team is looking forward to helping Mike with this and celebrating with him once he has done the job."
