OceanaGold is investigating gold mining scenarios at Blackwater, 37km south of Reefton, after more drilling of the area.
It's not the great gold rush of the 1860s, but mining companies are still making money from the precious metal in Otago.
The Government's shown its true colours in allowing mining company Oceana Gold to significantly expand its open cast mine on West Coast conservation land, the Green Party says.
OceanaGold, which operates mines in Otago and the West Coast, reported fourth quarter gold sales of 72,140oz, lifting its total for the 2009 financial year 14 percent from 2008 to a record 300,044oz.
South Island gold mine-owner OceanaGold Corporation raised about $A24.2 million ($NZ30.5 million) through a non-underwritten placement of new ASX-listed chess depositary interests (CDIs).
