Triple Olympic gold medalist Sir Peter Snell is one of just 24 athletes inducted into the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Hall of Fame today (NZT).
It has been 50 years since the great Peter Snell set the mile world record at Cooks Gardens and last night Whanganui celebrated the anniversary of its most famous sporting moment.
Fifty years ago Peter Snell left New Zealand a nobody and came back from the Rome Olympics with a gold medal.
Today a Lovelock memorial was unveiled near the abandoned mining settlement of Crushington, where he was born.
Yesterday he was knighted; today Sir Peter Snell was cast in bronze.
