This happens anywhere where there is a major sporting event. Ever tried to get cheap accommodation during the racing spring carnival in Melbourne? Very expensive!

Every time I have attended a major conference in another country the Hotel prices triple, prices are linked to supply and demand, live with it.

That's life folks, happens all over the globe. I'd do the same if I owned a motel/hotel - it's a chance to make extra bucks - if you don't like it, go somewhere else, pitch a tent, stay in a caravan park, sleep in your car, whatever, that's life! And yes, NZ will be a rip-off during the Rugby World Cup, but once again, it happens anywhere & everywhere, that's life!

Mark, I think you are getting a bit mixed up: The UK has ALWAYS been expensive, because their currency is (or at least was) very strong. The issue here is hotels hiking their prices because they have a captive audience. Please don't confuse an unfavourable exchange rate with blatent price gouging.

If we had the opportunity, most of us would jump at the chance of making 5-10k a week my renting out our houses. But now we are saying that commercial establishments are not allowed to be as enterprising. Funny how we are quick to pass judgment on others.

When there is no regulations, chaos rules! If you think the market will regulate itself think again!

This is a case of the consumer being gouged - it's immoral but not illegal. It is sanctioned by the government everday in the interests of business's making profits.

Here is a couple who have visited every rugby world cup since 1995. It is shameful of them to complain that they are having to pay $250 a night for a motel unit instead of $100. Bet that is still a whole lot less than their accom at S.A. and U.K. Prices should be market driven, this couple need to get a life and stop whinging.
