Police investigating the death of a Sikh security guard in West Auckland are set to decide today whether to launch a homicide enquiry.
The bloodied body of Charanpreet Dhaliwal was discovered on Friday at a Henderson construction site.
It was the 21-year-old’s first shift and he was the only guard on duty.
A post mortem has revealed how he died, but not how he got his injuries or if anyone else was involved.
Waitakere Detective Sergeant Eugene Pickett told NZ Newswire police were still considering both foul play and a workplace accident.
"We're still extremely open-minded in relation into what's happened here," he said on Monday.
A scene examination, CCTV footage reviews and interviews with the workers who discovered the body are under way "to try to establish things one way or the other", he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Dhaliwal's family in India and his flatmates in Papatoetoe have been informed of his death and were reportedly distraught.
Flatmate Surinder Singh says flying Mr Dhaliwal's body home to India will cost upwards of $8000, but he was hopeful the security company CNE will help cover the costs.
"If they can arrange for some money to send his body back to India, that would be really good for us," he said.
