A newlywed American man is dead and his wife critically injured after a crash in the Waikato this morning.

The accident occurred around 9:20 when the car, driven by the 31-year-old male, failed to give way on Waitomo Caves Rd. It collided with a northbound concrete truck on State Highway 3.

The man and his 28-year-old wife, the front seat passenger, were cut from their vehicle by the Fire Service. The female was flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.

It is understood the pair were tourists on honeymoon in New Zealand.

Waikato Road Policing manager Inspector Leo Tooman described the incident as an absolute tragedy.

“My heart goes out to the family and friends of the couple,” he said.

Police are asking for the driver of a green vehicle, overtaken by the couple shortly before the accident, to make contact with them.
