A male pedestrian has been killed after being struck by a southbound commuter train at peak hour in suburban Wellington.

The incident happened at 4.50pm near Linden Station, about 18 kilometres from downtown Wellington, as train travellers and passengers at the station platform watched, Inspector Marty Parker says.

Mr Parker says the deceased was believed to be male but no other details were available.

He said the police victim support unit were counselling a number of people after the incident, which happened away from a road crossing.

Bus services replaced trains for more than an hour after the crash.
