It has been a busy day for emergency services in the Bay of Plenty with two separate road crashes leaving a total of 18 people injured – many of them children and teenagers.
Several people are still in hospital; some in a critical condition.
A battered 4WD now lying in a paddock was carrying two adults and four children; at least one of the six occupants was left seriously injured on the other side of the road.
All were treated for injuries, two were airlifted to hospital, but it is not yet known what caused the accident or whether the passengers had been wearing seatbelts.
That was a question high in the mind of Bay of Plenty emergency services early this morning after a Toyota Hiace crashed leaving 12 teenagers injured and many strewn across the road.
The teenagers were returning from a party in Taupo when they crashed into a bank and flipped on State Highway 5 just south of Rotorua.
It is thought some of the teenagers had been sitting on a sofa in the back of the van. Two remain in a critical condition.
Police say both accidents happened in a flash but it will take several weeks to carry out their investigations to establish what caused them.
