Hospital staff are urging Kiwis to restrain themselves this holiday season, as their wards continue to fill up with people over-indulging on alcohol.

Festive spirits of the wrong kind have resulted in many burns, cuts and other injuries, all attributed to people drinking far more than what's appropriate.

Dr Paul Quigley from the Wellington Hospital emergency department says the impact of glorious summer weather can creep up on people who are drinking.

Dr Quigley says if people are drinking, they should stick to a limit of six standard drinks at the most and remember to drink plenty of water.

Hospitals should have a drunk tank, throw the drunks in there until they sober up before assessing them. No doctor or nurse wants a drunk uncooperative patient risking the lives of others. Then send them a 'medical bill' in the form of an infringement notice.

I'm with John on decriminalizing cannabis. However, big alcohol have a vested interest in keeping everything but alcohol illegal. The NZDDA have a commercial vested interest in scaring employers to use their services. John has a point, however no drug is completely safe and driving vehicles while stoned is as stupid as driving drunk.

If your injury is a result of your drinking, then you should have to pay part or full charge for your "accident". And its a pity the drunken bozos who abuse the people helping them still have to be helped. I say put them in a secure room and treat them last. The same for people who haven't worn a seatbelt or helmet. Yes I know every case is different etc, but if my relative is having a heart attack, been attacked or been in an accident because of a drunk person then forget the drunk self indulgent a hole. Enjoy the drink but dont get so pissed.

Decriminalise cannabis New Zealand. It's a safer alternative to binge drinking.
