A house fire in Kaiapoi, Canterbury, has now been contained.

The fire broke out around 2pm today at an empty house on Akaroa St.

Neighbour Trudi Marshall says the owners are away on holiday.

“I was just walking across the street when I heard the fire alarms go off and saw smoke pissing out of the windows, and that’s when I called the fire department,” she says.

Around 15 Fire Service staff, five fire utilities and two police staff attended the fire.
