Police are treating the death of a man who died after being injured in a fight at a Whanganui house as suspicious.

The 25-year-old man was one of a group of 15 people drinking and socialising at a Bedford Avenue house in the suburb of Gonville on Tuesday evening, police say.

Police believe some disagreements during the day and evening turned into a more serious fight, in which the Whanganui man, who did not live at the house, was injured.

A red Ford Telstar car brought him to hospital, where he died shortly afterwards.

"We are yet to establish how the man came by his injuries; however we are at this stage treating his death as suspicious.

"We believe we have identified most of the people were at the address but if there is anyone else who visited the house yesterday who hasn't yet been spoken to by police we would encourage them to contact us," said Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Kirby.

A post-mortem will be carried out on Thursday to determine the cause of death.

The man will not be named until next of kin have been informed.
