Housing NZ to look into slum claims

Housing New Zealand says it is investigating complaints that tenants of a central Auckland apartment block are living in slum conditions.
Greys Avenue residents say they have had to cope with blood-spattered walls, urine-soaked stairwells, and criminals and sex workers hanging around the premises.
Tenancy Services Manager Angela Pearce says inspectors will be sent out to talk with tenants in the flats.
“We acknowledge that the property isn’t in the condition we’d like, and it is an old building, and we need to make it a better place for tenants to live,” she says.
Ms Pearce says if tenants have any additional concerns they should let the agency know as soon as possible.
Labour has also weighed in on the issue, criticising the Government for being "slum landlords".

I am disgusted in the opinions of the people on here, we are not all dole bludgers. After a break up i had to sell my house and pull back my hours at work i ended up with next to nothing my now partner of 4 years had also gone through a similar situation but left everything for his son housing Nz has let us rebuild our lives for our kids and now we have saved a house deposit and are almost ready to move on we have spent money cleaning up gardens etc but housing Nz wouldn't even fix our fire til i complained for over a month and its still only half fixed the house is cold and draughty and is in serious need of a paint we have a rotten floor that they just put new lino on so it smells terrible and we still have no carpet. its not just the tenants making the place crap but there are some who are lazy and do make them shit. We can't control our neighbours actions there is always a few that will ruin it so move them along don't criticise ALL of us.

Offering people the chance to upskill is a worthy thing to do instead of handing out money for them to do nothing but thinking it will magically lower unemployment is a delusional lie that ignores the fact if there is a shortage of jobs and a excess of workers there will always be unemployment.

The tenants have themselves to blame if they lacked the decipline to control their leaks and sex urge. Pigs will turn any hotel suite into a pigsty.

I agree with Dan, there is no such thing as slums in NZ, the Govt is just throwing away the taxpayers hard earned money - there should be more inventiveised programs in rehabilitating/training people into the work force than giving them money - being unemployed is not physically or mentally healthy - it can do no one good and people have to be prepared to move to where the jobs are also.

It is the slovenly tenants who live like pigs who are turning the place into a slum; not the building! lol!

I agree Dan. As for Labour adding their 2 cents worth, these properties have probably been like that for decades.

What a joke, I spent 6 months living in rural India doing relief work, there is no such thing as slums or poverty in NZ.
