Cult-like groups are on the rise in New Zealand.

Now Inside New Zealand: How to Spot a Cult uncovers what really goes on inside these often controversial groups.

The two-part documentary consists of ex-believers' stories, and investigates the similarities they say exist between groups including the Exclusive Brethren, Scientology, Centrepoint, Gloriavale, and the international Church of Christ. The documentary includes abuse survivors who have never spoken before.

Dr Dennis Green has a PHD in religious studies, and features in the documentary. He spoke to Sunrise about spotting cults.

The comments here by "Sharon" are straight out of the "PR series" as written by L Con Hubbard and as used by the Cult of Scientology. Can anyone find a pro cult article authored by anyone other than a cult devotee ? No such thing !!!

I take it Graham that you have been actually caught up in a cult; which means that you know what you are talking about?

Yes the media is in the habit of sensationalising topics in order to make its' products more appealing. You'll find that in any commercial organisation. Would those that claim the media has a more sinister agenda please explain; whose or what vested interests they are protecting with this program, and also why 'they' wish the NZ public to be intolerant of different religions?

The facts support this documentary. I have first hand experience of two cultic organisations and can therefore see beyond the journalistic sensationalism and know that these cultic groups really are dangerous. You would not want to loose a dear friend or a family member to one, trust me.

Tanya: It is interesting how the media manipulates the viewer to make it seem that one thing is the same as all other things. This is very much discrimination just as saying "all blacks are the same" "all whites are the same" "all men are the same" or "all women are the same". This use of media to incite hatred is purely discrimination.

Scientologists contributed millions of dollars to Scientology and they were told that the money was going to "advance" Scientology, when it was really being smuggled out of the country and into secret European bank accounts owned by L Ron Hubbard. Scientology personally benefiting L Ron Hubbard is a sign of a destructive cult, as opposed to a rigion.

I'm not an advocate for electro shock therapy, over use of ritalin, or youth suicide either... just as I'm not an advocate for brainwashing cults that use people for their own self-indulgence. I never said I blame religion... A cult is not inherently religious by any means. The underlying message here is not about religion at all, it is that absolute power corrupts good people, religious or not.

Tanya; a typical generality and evidently there will be a lot more on the program like that; but this is not a program based on truth but aimed to incite religious intolerance. Child abuse: psychiatry is permitted to administer electro-convulsive shock to children without the childs consent even if they have the parents consent. Drug use: for that go to the 20,000 schoolchildren in New Zealand being prescribed ritalin. Suicide: A comparison of the latest age-standardised suicide death rates in 13 OECD countries26 between 2004 and 2006 shows New Zealand’s (2006) rate was the fifth highest for males (18.2 per 100,000 males) and the eighth highest for females (6.2 per 100,000 females) To say that religion is to blame for this is not only adventurous, but down-right irresponsible. You have been duped and are not looking at facts but doing what this program's creators intend; becoming filled with religious intolerance for any belief other than your own. Really, when it comes down to it, what does TV provide for our children; graphic violence, examples of children being abusive to parents (via so-called comedy shows), and porn via music videos that would rival any prohibited internet pornography that could ever by mustered. This is open abuse of the right (and it is a right) to public broadcast. It is being misused to create the mindset the perpetrators WANT NZ public to have; religious intolerance.

Most mainstream religious groups are not openly condoning child abuse, drug use and suicide in the name of religion etc... so there is a big difference between those mainstream groups you have listed and toxic cult like groups that preach these activities as the way to spiritual enlightenment.
