Mr hubbard's lawyer says the 50 charges laid against him by the Serious Fraud Office will be stayed by the court

Deceased Timaru financier, Allan Hubbard, will be presumed innocent of the serious fraud charges laid against him.

The 83-year-old died in a head-on collision on Friday - his wife Jean had been driving and suffered multiple fractures.

Mr Hubbard's lawyer, Mike Heron, says the 50 charges laid against him by the Serious Fraud Office will now be formally stayed by the court.

He says the investigations into his business will cease, as will the allegations.

Meanwhile, tributes are continuing to pour in for Allan Hubbard.

Labour's candidate for Rangitata, Julian Blanchard, says it's not just the Timaru region that's benefitted from the Hubbards' goodwill.

"The whole country really has benefitted from his generosity and goodwill and regardless of what happens now I hope history will remember Allan for all the good things him and Jean have done."

Mr Blanchard says one of the many groups Mr Hubbard loyally supported was local rugby.

I don't really care what he did or did not do for the community or charity work. I just look at the facts and the acts to determine what type of the person he is. I don't think he is a great man at heart like other blinded people said. If he really a good person at heart he should not take millions and millions of mum and dad investors savings money. Killing himself is not a solution but face up to his frauds is the one a real man should do. Bow's about his estate and family trust. I am sure millions of dollars is hidden there. What's a crook!

It is very sad that Alan Hubbard has died so tragically but I find it astonishing that so many defend him against fraud without knowing the full facts. Im sure if people had lost money like many others not being protected by the governments scheme that more would be more critical of his accounting practices. Alan Hubbard having peoples best interests at heart and not living lavishly does not excuse that he was arrogant and delusional in regards to his accounting and business methods. It a shame that the full story will now not come out - to either clear his name or not.

hubbards sudden death should not represent, or justify, a free get out of jail card, for himself, or anyone facing financial fraud, and criminal charges, against the past, present and future tax-paying residents of nz. what ever he and his lawyer, had planned for his defence, should still be seen to be accountable, in a court of law,, after all he was ADAMANT, that he COULD clear himself of defrauding nz taxpers of a billion dollars or more. HIS sudden DEATH should change nothing with regards to the charges he faces before court. hubbard may be dead, but his estate is not.
