An Auckland radio station has rejected claims its controversial Hug-a-Ginga Day is just another opportunity for red-heads to be teased.

The third annual Hug-a-Ginga Day will be held on Friday, May 28 and The Edge programme director Leon Wratt says it is simply a way to celebrate red-heads.

“It’s about showing gingas some appreciation and making them feel proud of their flaming locks,” he said.

Jessica Rice, a 23-year-old red head, says she’s indifferent to the day.

“I’m not offended, but I do think it is stupid,” she says.

“Nobody had better touch me.”

She says she may have been offended  if  she was still  in  high school.

“Stupid things like hair colour mattered a lot more at that age."

Fellow red-head Mike Earley is embracing the day.

"I won't say no to any girls that feel the need to hug a ginga," he says.

It is the gingas at high school that are likely to experience teasing, but Ms Rice says it shouldn't matter.

“I would hope they’d just brush it off,” she says.

“Maybe some of them would appreciate a cuddle.”

Is Hug-a-Ginga Day offensive?

This year 17 stations will be set up across the country where ‘gingas’ can go to be hugged, or win some ‘ginger-themed’ prizes.

“We’ve had messages from people as far away as the UK, promising to hug gingas in their hood,” says Morning Madhouse host, Jay-Jay Feeney.

“Hug-a-Ginga-Day is picking up momentum. We’ve had great support and excitement as the ginger-haired community count down a day created especially for them.”

The third annual Hug-a-Ginga-Day will be held May 28.

The reality is that my 2 red-haired sons get hassled at school for a whole day. It is easy for people who DON'T have red hair or kids with red hair to say it is harmless and fun. This year after forcing them to try and shrug it off I have reluctantly given them the day off school. So to the people who had this idea, thanks for reinforcing the idea that if you look a certain way you are a target for unwanted attention and for wasting my kids time and education.

Are you saying that being a ginga is bad, and that we need a day to stop picking on the red heads and say "Today we aren't going to pick on you today"

We think that it is not necessary to celebrate the Hug-a-Ginga Day. We think people with red hair are not special. They just are normal people. So,we should not discrimainate their hair. People with red hair will catch lots of attentions by other strangers at that day. Some people may dilike their hair and tease them. Red-heads will feel embrassed when someone pointed and laughted them on the street. All of us can not choose our physical appearance. They are innocent of their natural hair. Thus, we should treat them in fair way. No celebrating the Hug-a-Ginga Day may be a best choice for them.

Certainly, it seems to sympathize with red heads.
What i mean is they don't need to be treated like that.
Red hair isn't strange, just one kind of colour. It seems that ginga day encourages people to recognize red heads as different types of people or someone who needs to be cared about.
Even if you were a red head, it is too much to say that u should feel uncomfortable and discriminated against.

well, I'm surprised that there are people who think this is in good humor:(. Obviously, it's not fun at all!!!
It's a stupid prank. Just think how young childern would feel after they are teased by strangers. Strangers might say that one time to kids but kids could be teased many times a day. In my view, it causes serious problems for the kids to live in the real world. They could have social problems because of this stupid 'humor'.
It's time to stop doing it!!

Since I'm an Aisan, I have no ieda about the Hug-a-Ginga Day before. After I have read this article, I think people should not only focus on the red-heads. And, it seems to me that the Hug-a-Ginga Day is an opportunity for red-heads to be teased. I think it is not a good idea. It will discriminate those red-heads and is unfair to them. So, why not celebrate the othetrs who has different hair colour in the same way?

In my view, I didn't beleive that Hug-a-Ginga day is a problem. Different people with different hair colors may have different celebration, then is it a sort of offense?

Since i am Asian, we all got the black clour. I have no idea is there any negative meaning of the word "Ginga". I don't know why only hug the red hair. I think it is better to hug any one, who has different hair colour with you. Thus there will be no more discrimination and problems cause. People will have much more fun. Everyone can hug anyone or hugged by someone. Since we are all living in the same world, everyone should be fair even they have differetn hair colour.

It's a shame that there's a lack of understanding about stereotypes and discrimination on this issue.
