I wouldn`t entirely blame Helen Clarks Labour Govt, (although that damn anti smacking law has a lot to do with the situation now), Key had the chance to change it but didn`t.These sort of crimes in schools have been growing steadily since the early 1990s, it all stems from lack of discipline and biffing out the old corperal punishment,,,which ALL kids need!.
The last say? Social Engineering and the ineptitude of Helen's amateur Government. Assaults on teachers doubled in her term and she didn't do a thing. Amazing that most of the teachers are leftists themselves and now are caught up in this PC/Social engineering rubbish that has enabled kids to not only intimidate them but also assault them. Bring back the old days where respect was the 'key'. Caning should be reintroduced and any red fed leftist blow hard asked to go and control the kids who have been given this illegal power under social engineering misdirection!
Remember the good old days when a twenty first birthday was celebrated as coming into adult-hood and the key to life was given?Where has all that gone. Why does society seem to think that giving children “rights” is going improve the World? When I was at school I learned good old fashioned respect for my elders because we were disciplined accordingly. Today, there is no more discipline - free-reign is given to youngsters whose minds have not yet developed and who are unable to make correct judgement.Why is a teenager at 15-years of age considered an adult? Who made that decision? Many “young adults” in their twenty’s can’t even make accurate judgement. Society wants to allow teenagers to drive and consume alcohol before their minds are developed – go figure. Do they realise what kind of future-generation they are creating?Could you imagine a World governed by teenagers? Oh, too late... it already is. Lets drive drunk, beat up teachers, tag homes, abuse our parents (no, you don’t hear about that on the news do you?) and not think about what I’m going to do after school because the benefit is there waiting for me – what a life!Beating up teachers and throwing verbal abuse at anyone or anything that resembles authority is seen by them as “cool”. The ONLY respect that they have are for themselves and how they are perceived by their friends.Mr. Society, hear our pleas... instil adult punishment on those who commit adult crimes, irrespective of age. Bring back the cane and let’s get on with the job of piecing back together a young generation that gives respect and is well respected.
I would like to hear what John Key has to say about this and how it reflects on his support for the anti-smacking legislation, a clever interviewer could really have some fun with this one! The only way to change anything is to point out the absurdity of our current modus operandi; the whole thing reminds me of the famous fable The Emperors New Clothes. The powers that be say do not smack, there is another way and that’s ok so long as you are not the one being assaulted and at the same time being denied the right to defend yourself! Begging the question, if John Key had been a school teacher in another life and was on the receiving end; would he have been so keen to uphold the anti-smacking legislation and I am not taking any bets on the answer to this one? A good question to ask Mr Key on nationwide TV would anyone have the courage!
We teach them to behave like arrogant consequence little prats.We take away any control mechanism over them.We Criminalise legally parents, the only understood authority over them for disciplining them.Before that we banned teachers the supposed legitimate authority at schools over them from disciplining them....line up the Graphs. katrina, you don't want to put teachers through a self defense course because they will then be charged with assaulting a student. The problem needs to be dealt with at the root, not at the head. It's a problem that does not exist with a certain class of students as it happened in public and private schools. Stress Management, Anger Management need to be taught to kids from primary school. Students acting out should have their family lives investigated. All assault cases need to go before the police from schools, especially now National have lowered the age that these darlings can be prosecuted. I remember the day teachers lost control of students, it was the day the strap was removed, you could see the out of control students change tactics right then. But also there needs to be more of what National has helped roll out at one poly-tech in Auckland where students can leave high school and finish their education learning other skills. It's going to take some serious self reflection of our society to turn this problem around.
Nadeem you are so right. this is the result of PC crap. Kids don't have respect for other humans let alone teachers. A lot of kids seem to have an air superiority to them and they think older people are just idiots. Dude - part of what you have said is right but I don't think it is limited to your so called feral underclass (never heard them referred to like that before) you make them sound like wild cats. This problem is a society wide one. Maybe we should be like the US with metal detectors at the gates and 20 foot high fences so they can't just throw knives over the fence. We don't want the situation where kids feel they need to bring knives to school to defend themselves.Put all teachers through a self-defence course.

No suprise here! Many kids no longer have respect for their teachers (or indeed anyone in authority). No doubt there will be the usual PC nonesense about how teachers have to first EARN the respect of their students, but its tough when some parents actively seek to undermine the authority of the school. I recall a few weeks back that a report into truancy claimed it was very much a lower decile problem, but I know for a fact that, at a very prestigious high school, there are parents who won't think twice about providing a fake sick note.The situation was nicely summarised recently by a retiring high school principal: "Parental expectations of schools is also growing. They expect schools to have rules and enforce them, but not when it comes to their children". Is it any wonder that so many kids now leave school with the idea that they can do whatever they want, and then get their backs up when the police tell them otherwise?
