North Shore businessman Grant Malcolm Atkinson has disappeared without a trace.

The 48-year-old Chief Risk Officer and Senior Executive for finance firm Marac, left his Campbell’s Bay home for work on Tuesday morning, and simply vanished.

He has not used his cellphone and police have described his disappearance as “out-of-character”. Family fears are growing for his safety.

The police search is now focussed on a rural location, north west of Auckland after Mr Atkinson’s black 2007 Holden Calais was found shortly after midday today.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Sergeant Grant Hand on 09 477 5000.

My parents live very close to where the car was found and what a great effort people are putting in to find this man. It is so sad and our heart goes out to his family. It is amazing how people can come together when needed.

My parents live very close to where the car was found and it is very sad to see something like this so close to home. Our hearts go out to the family, and also would like to say they are doing a great job out there looking!
