A hunter has been shot dead in an accident near Wanaka, police say.

Police were called to a farm property in the Maungawera Valley, just out side of Wanaka at about 2:30am. A 24-year-old male was out with two friends rabbit shooting.

The group spotted a deer and two of the party pursued the animal from the farm land into a small patch of Mänuka, say police.

The pair separated and in the course of the hunt a shot was fired that hit the deceased in the back of the head.

He died at the scene.

Police are currently investigating the death on behalf of the Coroner, and a concurrent criminal investigation is also proceeding.

That is a terrible thing to say that "guns don't kill people, uneducated mentally ill people kill people" This situation is clearly a tragic accident and all families involved should only be send love and support. Not negativity. Pointing fingers and saying they must uneducated crack heads is awful and untrue. You shouldn't be so judgmental. Accidents happen. They are awful but they happen.

What happened sounds like a tragic accident. The Police have not ruled out brining a prosecution although it does need to be pointed out that no charges were laid against the Police officer who failed to identify the target and shot dead an innocent courier driver in Auckland a few years ago.

I love it how Nick contradicts himself, in one hand he wants to ban guns and then admits that guns dont kill people, uneducated mentally ill people do.

Imagine we banned everything because people had accidents with them. Heres a few things that kill more people than guns do in NZ, lets ban them

- cars
- ladders
- fatty food
- alcohol
- cigarettes
- stairs
- swimming at the beach and or rivers

No one can use these safely so lets ban them, what a wonderful world it would be.

I think its time NZ banned guns altogether, we obviously can't use them in a safe manner even when trying to be safe. Our country is too full of uneducated crack heads who need to invest time in their education, not in firearms. Guns don't kill people, uneducated mentally ill people kill people.
