Hurricane Irene has ravaged the eastern coast of the United States. Millions of homes still without power, the worst flooding for decades in New Jersey and Vermont, billions of dollars damage.

More than 40 people have been left dead by Irene but it looks like the warnings for people to get out and get safe have averted further disaster.

John Campbell and cameraman Chris Jones have been following the path of Irene up the eastern seaboard of the United States.

They've been assessing how the most powerful country in the world copes in the aftermath of a major natural disaster, and found a good old kiwi pie along the way

I was staying at the ANDAZ on Wall Street. I got back to the Hotel early Saturday morning 5:30am half tanked, and was told by the front desk... "we are being evacuated at 10am, please pack your belongings as we're moving you up to the Grand Hyatt in Midtown". Do you know how HARD it is to pack when your half pissed and your clothes are everywhere??? I managed to get everything... accept what was in the safe e.g. passport, wallet etc And no bloody Irene!!

I ask if the same flooding and climate damage had happened anywhere else in the world say the Philippines or South American would Campbell have given so much publicity etc to the problem. I am sure TV3 could have found other news of more interest to us than US climate problems from a topical storm.
