President Barack Obama takes off from the White House under clouds from the approaching Hurricane Sandy (Reuters)

Hurricane Sandy is set to hit Washington DC in about 10 or 11 hours, and Barack Obama has signed a state of emergency declaration for the region.

His response could make or break his election campaign, leading up to election day on November 6.

States of emergency have also been called across other states along the United States’ east coast.
