Dozens of Kiwis who've moved across the Tasman and aren't paying back their student loans are being chased by the IRD.

The department has just been given new powers to recall any student loan in long term debt, and it's targeting 45 of the worst offenders - who owe more than $1 million.

The debtors have 30 days to make repayments or face prosecution.

The IRD is also using private companies to track down Australian-based borrowers.

Mouthguard, I doubt that many of these ex pat graduates are professional property speculators, so the introduction of a CGT isn't going to deter them from coming back. The only thing stopping them is crap wages and a lack of quality jobs. Currently the only growth industries in NZ are dairying and politics.

pay up you pricks. I live in new zealand and a payment is taken out for my student loan every payday. can avoid it. If i tried would probably get my credit wrecked stuff stolen to recoup the money. If they arent paying because at the time it was done on the compounding interest i can understand why they arent coming back. Although its not fair to the ones who have already paid, maybe the government can hold an amnesty for christmas 2012 so they can pay back the loan plus say $10,000 and the rest written off. the judges here do this for some speeders who rack up over $15,000 in fines but if yours is minor they threaten to take you to court and take your stuff to pay for it. This country is haemoraging money so pay up.

Good. According to figures published by the Labour Party four years ago, they estimated that 1 million Kiwis are living and working overseas, and their AVERAGE income is just under $100, 000 NZ dollars. They can afford to pay back the loans. The real trick is to get these folks back here, producing for us. Maybe a capital gains tax will be enough enticement? LMAO.
