An iconic sculpture in Wellington is being dismantled this evening after 13 years of impressing tourists.

“Ferns” by Christchurch artist Neil Dawson has suffered corrosion where some of its eight cables are attached to it that keep it suspended in mid-air.

A Wellington City Councillor says just like other buildings by the seaside the sculpture is not immune to the outdoors.

Engineers are working all evening to safely bring down the sculpture for repair work.

But fear not, the council says it will be back up before the Rugby World Cup.
