The 16-year-old who raped a five-year-old girl tourist at a Turangi campground in a high-profile attack has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Raurangi Marino was sentenced in the Rotorua District Court, rather than Youth Court, because of the seriousness of the attack, which put the girl in hospital for nearly a week.
Marino was jailed for 10 years for rape, seven for grievous bodily harm and two years for burglary. The terms were to be served concurrently.
Marino earlier admitted rape, causing grievous bodily harm by sexual violation and burglary.
The maximum jail term for rape is 20 years.
The family of four, from Europe, had been travelling around New Zealand and were staying at the Turangi campground on December 21.
The girl and her three-year-old brother were sleeping in a caravan while their parents were using the campground's computers when Marino broke in and raped the girl.
Her mother returned to the caravan to find it locked and she could see the attack happening. She ran for help and Marino escaped.
He was arrested a week later and admitted the attack at a subsequent court appearance.
Despite the horrific attack, the family continued their holiday and donated $20,000 to the support agencies that helped them.
New Zealanders had donated more than $62,000 to the family following the attack.
