Iggy Pop used to cover himself in olive oil and pour glitter all over his body before he went on stage.
The outrageous singer is known for his long, blonde hair, sinewy frame and unusual fashion choices.
Iggy has performed in a variety of provocative outfits, covered himself in peanut butter and slashed his chest with glass since he rose to fame as the enigmatic frontman of the Stooges.
He is renowned for his love of low-slung skinny jeans and famously wore plastic see-through trousers for one live performance.
Iggy believes clothes are the best way to make a statement and grab headlines and so he always makes an effort to shock when he is entertaining a crowd.
"Image is very, very important, in music," Iggy said in an interview with British newspaper The Independent.
"It always was. However, the transmission has become more democratic, because of digital communication, so if you have a nice flashy shirt, or you’re a**e-crack shows, you can get the message across without as much corporate censorship.
"Because of deficiencies in the lighting system, to be more visible I used to pour baby oil over myself then pour glitter all over my body, just to catch the light. It spoke of refractions to come; it spoke of resonance."
The 63-year-old star admits he hasn’t always been happy with his fashion choices.
In the 70s, Iggy and his bandmates agreed to work with a designer who had a strong sense of vision for the group.
However, his ideas were too bizarre even for Iggy, so he went back to choosing his own clothes.
"We hooked up with a dubious clothing designer called Bill Whitten, and he reimagined me as a giant praying insect or dragonfly or something, and James [Williamson] as some sort of vampire,” Iggy explained.
“We started looking like we had wandered in from a junkie sci-fi movie."
