Sexagenarian punk rocker Iggy Pop has finally decided to act his age and give up stage diving.

Pop, who will turn 63 in April, blames his new safety-conscious ways on a bad dive at a gig in New York.

Instead of catching him mid-flight, the Carnegie Hall audience unexpectedly parted, leaving nothing but air between the Stooges frontman and the floor.

"When I landed it hurt, and I made a mental note that Carnegie Hall would be a good place for my last stagedive," said Pop.

"The audience were just like, 'What are you doing?'"

The Stooges inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last week.
