Illness is on the rise after flooding in Fiji

By Michael Morrah

While the worst of the flooding has subsided, health officials are reporting an increase in illnesses in Fiji.

There have been 50 cases of diarrhea confirmed overnight and 40 cases of typhoid notified in western areas of the island.

For Mahesh Kumar and his family the cleanup has been unrelenting, the road outside his drive a river and his possessions waterlogged and ruined.

"The first time the water came inside the house it was two feet. Second time, one and a half feet. And the third time was one foot. It's very hard for me," says Mr Kumar.

His neighbours up the road are also struggling. With a break in the rain, they headed to town for food.

Floodwaters have stranded them for the past three days and they also need to get to a hospital.

"I'm just getting out now to buy some stuff - rice and flour. And to the hospital because Mum is sick," says flood victim Rishken Reddy, whose mother has a fever and has been vomiting.

Despite the outbreak of illness health officials are yet to declare a public health emergency, largely because the cases of typhoid and diarrhea are spread right across the west of the island rather than concentrated in one area.

Aliti Dawai lives closer to the main town Nadi and was slightly more fortunate.

The fire service helped at her place yesterday, but early this morning they were flooded again.

"It will take months to clean up in the house... especially in the farm too," says Ms Dawai.

It's a sentiment shared by everyone in the area.

Further south the army has been helping with the clean-up in the village of Ba, but 3 News saw no officials in Rakiraki today where people are being left to cope on their own at this stage. The outlook does not look great for them, with more heavy rain and thunderstorms expected over the next two days.
