Still from Immortals

Still from Immortals

By Kate Rodger

Fans of the Zack Snyder film 300 have been girding their loins in anticipation of this new swords and sandals outing, this time from filmmaker Tarsem Singh (The Fall).

Introducing the soon-to-be superman Henry Cavill onto the big screen in all his impressive glory, he plays mortal hero Theseus in this story of gods and men as he takes on the ruthless king Hyperion (Mickey Rourke).

They both chase the legendary Epirus Bow, as Hyperion seeks to unleash the mythical titans for his own evil-doing and Theseus, with help from the god Zeus, seeks to stop him.

The much-hyped visuals in this film totally deliver and the bloodthirsty hordes will be loving the R16 battle gore (lily-livered me not so much).

While Immortals is certainly an improvement over the more bland, politically correct Clash Of The Titans, it's still a little too derivative and unwieldy to be a stand-out.

Three stars.
