New Zealand's median house price is $390,000. In Auckland, it's $563,000 – 44 percent more.
But a teacher in Auckland earns the same as a teacher in Southland, where the median price is less than a third of our largest city's.
This is creating a crisis, and 1.4 million people live in Auckland. They can't all move to cheaper areas.
And as politicians grapple with how to get people into their own homes without destroying the equity of people already in homes, Campbell Live noticed National MP Sam Lotu'inga saying "go where you can afford…in my electorate there are over 1100 homes under $500,000".
