A man has been told he faces a jail sentence after attacking a friend who spread rumours that he had been unfaithful to his girlfriend.

Palmerston North District Court was told on Friday that Brent Lowe, 19, punched the friend to the ground and then stomped once on his head.

The attack happened shortly after Lowe's girlfriend ended their relationship, accusing him of cheating on her following rumours spread by the friend, The Manawatu Standard reported.

Lowe told police: "I want him to feel pain as I have."

Lowe was convicted of assault with intent to injure and remanded on bail until sentencing on March 17, Judge Grant Fraser saying hat "imprisonment is absolutely inevitable".
