A little blue penguin is preparing to return to sea after being washed up on Muriwai Beach.

The penguin, which had been battered by waves, had head and leg injuries. Unable to walk or stand, she needed a caregiver to lead her around.

Little blue penguins are the smallest in the world and when they have been injured need a little guidance.

The penguin is almost ready to stand on her own two flippers and return to sea, having been nursed back to health by a bird rescue volunteer.
