The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has released 70 years worth of secret documents, containing eye-witness accounts of UFO sightings.

While defence says it hasn’t got the resources to analyse them, one UFO expert says it’s best to get any UFO secrets out into the open.

The 12 volumes of documents date back to 1952 and include illustrations of what UFO spotters claim to be aliens.

The 2500 pages contain reports from the public, military personnel, and passengers on board aircrafts, and were released by the NZDF today in exchange for a $150 photocopying fee.

UFO expert Murray Bott told 3 News most UFOs are less mysterious than they seem.

“I don’t believe the Government will have anything of great value,” he says.

“But it is essential for transparency.”

Mr Bott says 90 percent of what people report as “Unidentified Flying Objects” become identified flying objects – reflected light, lens flare, aircraft in unusual lighting conditions, toy hot air balloons, or LED kites.

He says a true UFO may not mean it’s extra terrestrial, there’s simply insufficient information to identify it.

The NZDF is keen to point out the books are collated documents only.

It says it doesn’t have the resources to analyse or investigate the contents.

New Zealand’s most famous UFO sighting was off the coast of Kaikoura in 1978. UFO s were seen following a freight plane. Also caught on aircraft radar, it is one of the world’s best-documented sightings.

Thirty years on, journalist Quentin Fogarty says they “saw something highly unusual that can’t be explained in mundane terms”.

More recently, a UFO was reported over the Waitakere Ranges in August.

The witness described something that looked like a ship in the sky, with three big spotlights flashing different colours.

The UFO files have been held by Archives New Zealand, but were released after a request under the Official Information Act.

The NZDF has removed some names from the documents, to comply with privacy rules.

Throughout the documents, RNZAF letters repeatedly state that it doesn’t conduct investigations into UFOs.

Perhaps best summarised by a letter in relation to one sighting, which says, “No further comment at this end, and I am not raising the subject. Let it die a natural and unmourned death”.

what i find most amusing about this is the fact they say they havnt the resources to analyse ufo documents!! well i say if the military etc had told the truth from the start their would have been hundreds if not thousands of people voluntarily helping out with them!! its a fasicinating subject!! im pleased this info is finally out but feel its only a fraction of what they have from new zealand, i hope the states will follow suit but i dought it. julians put a giant step forward in exposing the truths and coverups and corruption, i feel the world governments only have a short time to come out with the truth and save face before it is exposed without thier consent , which will inevitably crush the already unstable system, people arnt actually sheep and people have brains, coincidently so do the sheep!!!! i say come clean with all the people about whats realy going on out there who knows you may even get some respect for doing so. iv seen ufos all my life and taken photos, filmed them and have no dought we are not alone in the universe. theres a brilliant documentary called (i believe in ufos by danny dyer) the english film actor. it has wicked footage and the likes of campbell would find it interesting to the point i bet he would want to do a show on it, google is your friend! its on youtube aswel if anyones interested in ufos.

Living in Gisborne in 1978 along with many many other people I also saw 'activity' on 3 different occasions. Lights each time but moving as no aircrft or balloon could ever do. One occasion whilst walking along the beach a light moved across from the Waimata valley to directly over me and stopped - no sound and it was below the cloud cover - it hovered for a few seconds then took off so fast at a right angle to the route it originally was on prior to stopping I would guess it was about 200ft above me. It was so fast that is was out of sight within seconds. An other time we watched lights actually meet meet up, pulse for a few seconds and then move off very fast in different directions. My son also saw a craft hover over he and his friend in a parked car up in the valley. A very intense white light covered the whole area and the radio burst into life but wasnt even turned on. As reported in the local newpaper at the time there were over 200 sightings. Why did this not hit the national headlines when only one light over Kaikoura sent everyone into a spin. I find this most interesting!!!

The interesting thing is that's only a small fraction of sightings. Most people don't report what they see, like me I don't have a clue who to contact or have the motivation to go through the hassle of details. My most favoured personal sighting was one night after coming home from night shift I looked up to see a satellite and feeling pleased for not seeing one in awhile I watched it cross the sky only to be surprised it stopped dead still and was still in that same spot an hour later but I then had to sleep. I have 2 or 3 other sightings from over the years. With the amount of people that have seen things, it's hard to deny there is something going on here- whether aliens or secret military technology- the public don't know. Both scenarios should anger the public for being kept in the dark for so long. If military has that tech, share it so I can ditch this dead planet. If it is aliens, tell the world already GEEE.
