Invercargill City Council's chief executive has been charged with drink-driving after crashing his council car on Friday night.

Richard King told the Southland Times he had been involved in a car crash in the city and was breath-tested by police.

He returned a reading of 584mcg, over the legal limit of 400mcg.

The driver of the other car involved in the accident suffered bruising.

"I have spent the weekend shocked and dismayed at what happened and thankful that no-one was seriously injured," Mr King said.

In the coming weeks, Mr Shadbolt and councillors, who employ Mr King, are expected to decide his future in the job, the newspaper said.
