A 20-year-old man has been arrested over the alleged sexual assault of an eight-year-old girl.
The man will appear in the Invercargill District Court this afternoon in relation to the incident which occurred at popular Oreti Beach on Saturday.
Police say the little girl was playing in the sand dunes at 4pm, around 50 metres south of the beach's main entrance, when the alleged assault occurred. The beach is understood to have been very busy at the time.
Police continue to appeal for information and are asking anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area to contact Invercargill Police on (03) 211-0400.
