IS this the ecological disaster we're being told it is?

IS this the ecological disaster we're being told it is?

We have oil on pristine beaches. We have countless dead birds. We have fishing operators out of work and a holiday destination heading into summer.

There's economic impact without a doubt, but is this the ecological disaster we're being told it is?

I think you have missed the point. Professor Schiel acknowledged the damage and the implications, however he also put it into perspective. As a marine ecologist I'm sure he of all people is aware of the ecological cost of the oil spill. Of course it is a disaster, but comparing it to the Exxon Valdez is completely misguided. I certainly thought the oil spill to be far larger than it actually is before seeing this piece. It is far more "disrespectful to the people and our nation" to cause hysteria by overstating the situation.

This is very irresponsible media! Just how big of an ecological disaster is it? How about I put just one drop of this lovely oil in David Schiel's tea cup? It's just a tiny amount. Quit saying "it's not to belittle the damage" and just stop belittling it! Just one bucket of oil - not very much - in your swimming pool? on the Mona Lisa? It got blown out to sea, so it's ok? Some micro-organisms can choke oil down, so it's not a problem? Are you mad? This piece is so disrespectful of the people and to our nation. So - the Exxon Valdez was much bigger - which means we are overstating this disaster? This is some kind of weird doublespeak. Please apologise.

Great to see TV3 bring some intelligent perspective on this, this issue has been way over hyped and politicized.
