By the 1950's Canadians were asking “what does our flag say about us?”
And in 1965 the maple leaf-inspired design became their flag – and it is amongst the most instantly recognisable of all national flags.
They remained in the commonwealth, the Queen signed off on it, no heads were chopped off, but they had a flag that spoke of them.
Last night, a Campbell Live poll found that very nearly two thirds of you favour changing the New Zealand flag.
