They call them ‘canal monsters,’ and just when they think they can get no bigger, another whopper is hauled in from the deep.

Evan Johnson from Timaru is the latest to re-write the record books with his enormous – some might say freakish – brown trout that’s just a couple of pounds shy of a world record catch.

It’s believed no-one has ever caught a bigger brown trout in New Zealand waters.

But why are these fish growing so big? And why do some people say it's not really fishing at all?
