When you think of old school hip hop, you think Grandmaster Flash and the Sugarhill Gang, but the next act really does redefine the concept.
Nightline travelled out to the hood – well Bucklands Beach anyway – to bring you this story.
Not many MCs rap about colostomy bags, but John Carr isn't your typical 'money-cash-hoes' rapper.
"I only made a conscious decision [to start] when we were travelling in the car and my wife was controlling the CD player," he says.
It's a long story, but 12 months later John's unique material has seen him headlining a conference of nurses who specialise in colostomy bags, and he opened a medic alert office with this number: "I'm a hip hop legend Molly / I've had three / I've got a stool in the shower from the ACC / A stool in the shower / Don't get me wrong / A stool in the shower when you can't stand long."
The grandfather of one's Comedy Fest show is a tribute to that elixir of Kiwi memories and memory lapses – Cold Duck wine.
"It came out in 1971 the sexual revolution in New Zealand started three days later – not a moment too soon," says John.
"This stuff was the nectar of love for my generation."
His act is successful because it's an uneasy marriage of humour and truth about subjects younger comics wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole.
"It's a colostomy and I wear it with pride / That's why I wear it on the outside," he raps. "I buy 'em by the season / I buy 'em by the bunch / I got one for my breakfast and two for my lunch."
"When I get introduced as a rapper and I look like someone's accountant's stage, they're laughing before I get to the microphone," he says.
And you can see John for yourself when he performs in Cold Duck and Tamagotchis in Auckland on Saturday night.
