Protesters clash with policemen as they tried to break into a hotel which leads to the Japanese consulate (Reuters)

US Secretary of Defence Leon Panetta has warned that territorial disputes between China and Japan have the potential to become wider conflicts.

Panetta, who is due in New Zealand later this week, has expressed concern about escalating tensions between the two countries over the ownership of a group of islands.
