J Edgar Hoover was an extraordinary man and the part he played as head of the FBI for over 40 years during some of the most tumultuous times in American political history made him one of the most powerful and hated men in America.
Clint Eastwood now delivers his story, his professional one and his personal, with Leonardo DiCaprio his Hoover.
This film's pedigree is certainly not under question here, and DiCaprio makes a fine J Edgar with some excellent support outings too.
But despite that, and the fact this is an incredibly fascinating slice of history, this was a surprisingly dull and lifeless watch and I eventually found myself fighting a losing battle to maintain interest.
Three stars.
