Jack Bauer's selection surprised many, being picked ahead of big names like Hayden Roulston and Julian Dean. Alongside Greg Henderson, Bauer's recent form was too difficult for the selectors to ignore. The European-based pro, will be representing New Zealand in the men's road race on the games' opening day. A young Jack Bauer trained himself up by taking on a job as a cycle courier. He was playing bass guitar in aband, but after they split he decided to take cycling seriously, and moved to Belgium. He began his sporting career in cross-country mounting biking, but made a successful switch to road racing in 2007. It will be his first Olympic Games.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Winning the New Zealand National Road Race in 2010, ahead of Roulston and Dean.
  • Being a part of Garmin-Barracuda's time trial-winning team in the Giro d'Italia race in May.
  • Coming from nowhere to finish second in the Tour of Southland in 2009.
