Australian actor and heart-throb Hugh Jackman is known as the nicest man in Hollywood, but ask the Manly Sea Eagles fan to cheer for the Warriors and it is enough to tip him over the edge.
Jackman is back home in Sydney to promote his latest film Reak Steel but when conversation turned to the All Blacks and the Rugby League Grand Final this weekend, I had to duck for cover.
Jackman is back and in the ring for his latest movie about robots and boxing.
“For about two years people, even close friends, were saying ‘a robot boxing movie, really?’ And their eyes glaze over and I said just wait. You could describe it simply as Rocky meets Transformers. But for me it’s more Rocky because there is a really great redemption story here.”
Set in 2020, boxing has become the domain of enormous robots punching the nuts and bolts out of each other.
Jackman's character Charlie is a washed-up boxer whose robots are not faring much better.
When his robot-mad estranged son gets dumped on him both their fortunes change.
For Jackman this role meant looking like a real boxer and months in the gym, training with the best.
Based in Los Angeles, he still calls Australia home.
So Hugh, who is going to win the Rugby World Cup?
“I have to say I do have and have had a feeling in my gut from the beginning that this is the year for the All Blacks.”
“I'm a Manly Sea Eagles fan since I was born. That took all my generosity, and you’ve just tipped me over the edge. Come on they did well to get to the final, that’s enough.”
