Olympic shot put hopeful Jacko Gill has opted for a rest after his record-breaking exploits of the past two weeks.
Originally scheduled to contest Thursday's Millennium Shot Put competition on the North Shore, the 17-year-old says his efforts in qualifying for the London Olympics and breaking his own world youth record have taken a physical and mental toll.
On Monday, Gill broke his own world youth record with the 5kg shot by 10cm, firing it out 24.45 metres on his second attempt in Auckland.
Earlier, he threw 20.07m with the senior 7.26kg shot, his second-best distance at that level.
He bettered the 20.30m qualifying standard for the London Olympics on December 5 with a 20.38m effort.
The mark bettered his national record of 20.01m set in April this year, which broke Les Mills' 19.80m set in 1967.
The world under-18 and under-20 champion owns 11 world records for different age groups and different weighted implements.
