A beneficiary who indecently assaulted a teenager after tying her up during a home invasion in the upmarket suburb of Remuera has been jailed for five years and nine months.

Shane Victor Hughes, 35, was sentenced in Auckland District Court after admitting charges of possession of a weapon, indecent assault and unlawful detention.

He was given a minimum non-parole period of three years by Judge Phil Gittos, Auckland Now reported.

Hughes was charged after getting into the Victoria Ave home in the early hours of September 22 last year, armed with a knife and a hammer.

He then tied the 19-year-old girl up and indecently assaulted her while her family slept before escaping with a number of items.

Charges of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia were withdrawn.
