War veteran Eric Brady was viciously beaten by 19-year-old Maurangi Pere

A "cowardly" teenager who broke war veteran Eric Brady's jaw and held up a Queen's Service Medal holder at knifepoint in separate attacks was not put away for long enough, says one of his victims.

Maurangi Pere, 19, was jailed in Manukau District Court yesterday for eight years and 10 months for the brutal attack on 85-year-old Mr Brady and the knifepoint theft of a car from 68-year-old Limaono Kingi.

Crown prosecutor Kevin Glubb had asked for a jail term of 10 to 12 years for the attack on Mr Brady which he said had "all the hallmarks of a home invasion-type offence".

South Auckland health care worker Limaono Kingi, who was awarded a QSM for his work within the community, said Pere would offend again and should have been given the maximum sentence, The New Zealand Herald reported.

Mr Brady had his jaw was broken in at least two places when Pere dragged him from his car at the Papatoetoe RSA and attacked him in February.

Mr Brady had titanium plates inserted in his face which was left badly swollen and bruised.

When he attacked Mr Brady, Pere was on bail for the attack on Mr Kingi.

Mr Kingi was doing paperwork in his car when he was approached by Pere in Papatoetoe.

They chatted about the weather before Pere ordered him out of the car at knifepoint and drove off.

Pere admitted charges including causing grievous bodily harm and being armed with a knife.

Judge Charles Blackie said he would serve a minimum of four years for the cowardly attack Mr Brady who had risked his own life to protect him and the rest of the country in World War 2.

9 years I guess is sufficient for grevious bodily harm of this nature, chances are though he will be released on parole halfway into his sentence.

There is no Justice and the worst part is that the offender will come out of jail and do it again, and again, and again.
That is to keep the lawyers in a job - after all, each and every time they have to do their learned arguments, and the minimum they have to argue for is reduced sentences. If we lock career criminals up, then the lawyers will be out of work! Now, would that be justice?

What has happened to the Justice system in NZ, why are lots of these youths getting away with this! because NZ is so worried about being PC, giving these young teens and offenders more rights than the victims, the Police are a laughing stock, let the Police do there Job, give them the Powers! Zero tolerence! I grew in South Auckland and served Queen and Country! and for what! for this to happen! NO! We put faith in our Justice system to work, and the Police to be able to do there work!! these brats need a bootcamp! Winston Peters had a great Idea, which was bring back national service, but those pencil pushing do gooders in the Beehive and other PC supporters said no!! You steal the rights of the Maori and all NZ with the Fore shores act, and then flood in heaps of immigrants from the East to boost up voters for Labour, and what do you get? Kiwis getting attacked and murdered and treated unfairly. Mr Brady hope you recover soon and God bless soldiers like you that made join the Army to protect this Country, but who protects us from our Country?
