Jane Yeh has created a copycat of Kate Middleton's Royal Wedding dress

While Kate Middleton was on her way to the church - a certain group of New Zealanders were watching her very closely.

While she's still in the car, New Zealand’s wedding designer to the stars Jane Yeh is spotting what details she can. She furiously sketches the design - with just 17 hours to produce a replica.

It's a race against the clock

In response to Ava, Ava if you had read the article in the Woman's Weekly magazine about Jane Yeh's replica, maybe you would understand that she was ASKED to create a replica of Kate's Dress, it was not her own personal decision, How was she meant to know what exact fabrics to use if she had no clue what the dress was going to look like? Quite frankly i think you are being quite racist as she has a shop and all her designs are unique and are designed and produced in this country. She lives here with all her kiwi family. Before you judge Jane and her work, you should get some back ground knowledge about this replica, or maybe look at her website to see all her original Kiwi Designs that are produced in this country. Thanks.

Ava, I struggle to find quality New Zealand Made and designed apparrel, Even when I think I am buying and expensive New Zealand Designer outfit, I get home look at the label to find is says made in China. So even our designers are taking the cheap way out to make more money.
I agree I hate the idea of everything being made in China but some NZ designers are not helping the cause.

Dear John,
I love watching your programme. However, I was very disappointed to see a replica of Kate’s dress after the Royal Wedding on Friday. Even more so because the lady was congratulated on producing an “exact” copy.
There was no mention of plagiarism or copyright, only limited acknowledgement of the hours of work which went into the original and no mention that the fabrics used to create the copy would have been nowhere near the quality of the original exclusive creation.
We all know that the kiwi number 8 wire mentality was generated when New Zealanders were encouraged to copy from the rest of the world. This was because there were severe restrictions on importing quality goods from overseas. That is no longer the case. Now our own clothing design and retail industry is selling mainly Asian copies from Western European designs ... our Kiwi home grown designers suffer as a result, because they cannot compete on price with Chinese goods, especially.
In my experience as a quality genuine European fashion retailer, my wares are constantly being compared with “cheap and cheerful” lower quality Asian products. Our suppliers are paranoid that Asian designers will just take their designs and copy them. That means less choice for Kiwis and low price volume goods stopping people wearing quality.
Why copy? Fashion demands imagination – and understanding as well as quality fabrics; check out the catalogues and volume shops - no imagination and only copies of someone else’s creation in fast shrink, low lustre fabric. NZ has just passed laws against copyright theft for music – why not fashion??
I’d love to see this debated on your show.

Both designers are very talented! Kate's for making such a stunningly simple yet flattering design that is timeless but also Jane for making such a great replica in such an amazing time. I hand sewed my flowergirls dresses and it took me MONTHS!
