The 8.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan last night has bent the tip of the iconic Tokyo Tower.

The structure broadcasts TV and radio signals and is a key element in Tokyo’s tourism trade – drawing over 150 million visitors since its completion.

As night fell and temperatures hovered just above freezing after the quake, tens of thousands of people remained stranded in Tokyo.

The rail network stayed down and the streets were jammed with cars, buses and trucks trying to get out of the city.

The city has set up 33 shelters in city hall, on university campuses and in government offices, but many planned to spend the night at 24-hour cafes, hotels and offices.

The bent antennae is on the Tokyo Tower. The straight antennae is atop the Sky Tree a different structure entirely. People, come on!

@Observer - Please be more observant. The other posts are correct about the damage to the tower, the pic on the right is zoomed in to show it clearly.

To the post above, if you've actually seen pictures of Tokyo tower up close, you'll notice that the after picture is of the tower's tip zoomed in. Wake up idiot. No one is making this up

The pictures are different exposures of zoom idiot. You looking at only the spire bent. The old pic is from much further away. Your the idiot.

A better photograph of the tower is at: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1c/Tokyo_Tower_M4854.jpg

Seemingly, the image on the right shows a magnified detail of the tip of the tower. Looking carefully on the left image, it is possible to identify, at the tip of the tower, a white segment, and above of it, a red one. The paint of the tower could also have been changed a little.

Actually they're not completely different structures, the 'after' picture is simply a much more zoomed-in shot. And yes, the paint is different but nobody said the 'before' picture was taken *just* before.

Also, it's not a blog post.

Go to sleep, idiot.

The after photo is actually a close up of the very top of the tower shown on the left. It was the very tip of the tower that bent. Not point in being nasty.

"Observer" is judging to quick. Only you can see that the left photo was made before the tower was repainted. That's all...

@observer You need two things: One is a Manners Class. Two is a course in photo analysis. They are the same structure. The angle is different and the magnification is different. You shot wildly and wounded the writer unnecessarily.
