Jennifer Aniston and her boyfriend Justin Theroux placed the US $450,000 winning bid on a painting at a charity auction on Thursday.

The abstract work, Stranger #44 by Glenn Ligon, was estimated to fetch between US $150,000 to US $200,000 but Aniston and Theroux bid big at the Christie's auction in New York.

They set a new sales record for a painting by the American conceptual artist.

Aniston's pal Ben Stiller helped organise the Artists for Haiti fundraiser, which pulled in US $13.6 million for health and education initiatives in the earthquake-ravaged Caribbean country.
