3 News has counted around 27,000 job ads today – and some of them are duplicates.

With 159,000 Kiwis out of work, is it fair to describe New Zealand's economy as going through a "jobless recovery"?

Hone Morrison wants a job and he was looking at the 127 available at the WINZ office in Lower Hutt today.

After four months on the dole – Mr Morrison got lucky – up to $16 an hour cutting trees.

“Today was quite successful – I got myself a arborist job,” he says.

It was one of:

  • 6,087 available at WINZ
  • 13,549 at Seek.co.nz
  • 7,663 on TradeMe

That is a total of 27,299 job advertisements and the job sites say there is work out there.

“The number of jobs we have at TradeMe jobs is at the highest level in nearly 18 months – so it’s certainly not that gloomy,” says TradeMe’s Jimmy McGee.

Annemarie Duff of Seek.co.nz is also optimistic.

“Job seekers can be a little bit more confident that we are turning a little bit of a corner and we’re going to see that continued pattern of growth,” she says.

The best place to get a job is Auckland – with 11,167 total jobs adverts; the worst is Northland – with 537 adverts.

The official unemployment rate has just taken a sudden jump to 6.8 percent – that's 159,000 people out of work.

But that is based on figures from June, leaving the Social Development Minister happy to talk up today's adverts.

“We need to be stepping up and making sure we're applying for the jobs, putting our CV's forward in the best way we can but certainly we have seen evidence of late there are jobs out there,” Paula Bennett says.

This is only still one job advert for every six people out of work – and some of the jobs may of course be advertised in more than one place.

If there is a recovery, its certainly not an aggressive one – ‘stumbling’ would be a better word.

Can't say I see it the same as govt
I know people who now call John Keys there uncle JK as its much better to be unemployed than to work. But lets be honest it was Helen that started it.

Hi JT: I wonder if Prime minister John Keys can answer or has a answer to what he thinks of the situation,by which has changed and effected your opportunity to support your family......He need to be challenged Face to Face,by you.....as the nation will be right-behind,every-step of the way

Actually job are often on twice. Trade me and seek have jobs listed twice and winz often have jobs on both sites as well. There's some jobs advertised, where positions have been filled. So there's possibly only 20,000 job os less. One in 6 probably more like one job for every 8 unemployed people. Northland have 537-probably more like 480, which has 7,000 unemployed.

Okay we get the story of how many jobs there are ...

You tell me this national, if theres so many jobs then why arent the positions being filed ?
Also tell me another thing , have you done any kind of research into applying for these jobs??

My problem is i have a young son 9 months old
i was working as a bartender at a resturant/cafe/bar , my hours were great , but then all of a suddon eversince john key brainwashed my boss into his new work cut system my hours were droped from 40+ hours per week round $500 - $600 pw down to 15 - 20 hours and 2 get next 2 NO assistance from welfare and atm and you want 2 cut it even more??? i had 2 quit my job all together because welfare could support my son better than i could and that isnt fair at all that 20 hours gets me roughly $200 perweek from workpay , that JUST covers my RENT < that doesnt even pay for my power food or petrol 2 get 2 work! not 2 mention being able 2 put dinner on the table for my family anyway because the price of food has also gone up and my student loan fees come out ontop of all that ...

I have been into work and income and EVERYTHING is EXPERIANCE needed.
Or they just advertise because they have 2 and the FRIEND of a FRIEND gets the position .

National sits there and says we are just lazy but the real story is I HAD a great paying job with labours system and everthing was going 2 plan for my sons education ,ALL the savings WE saved for oUR son we had 2 use on puting a roof over my familys head and now i blame you for this john key .. you've pretty much destroyed my life since your so called system has been in place.

You tell me thats cricket?? coz it aint

I'm sure most of the 27,000 jobs have been counted twice. Usually whats advertised on seek.co.nz is also on trademe jobs
