New York is a city still in lockdown as it waits for daylight before counting the cost of Hurricane Irene.

The hurricane has caused widespread flooding and structural damage across the east coast with the damage bill expected to run into tens of billions of dollars.

Shops here remain shut, Times Square is deserted, the subway and airports are still closed.

The economic cost of closing businesses for Irene is estimated to be $48 billion alone.

John Campbell and cameraman Chris Jones have had quite the journey to get to New York. They flew into Los Angeles on Saturday and then to Atlanta, and then to Durham in North Carolina. From there they drove three and a half hours to Virginia Beach, and then a 12 hour drive up the east coast to New York.

Overnight Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm but not before unleashing its fury.

I found your new York coverage one-sided and belittling. I moved from NY to NZL recently and I would never have heard an American journalist talk about Christchurch the way you depicted NYers. Maybe the Mayor Bloomberg should have let people die after all dead people don't complain. ..

Why on earth send JC to NY? We have all we need to know without that expense. It is over and not relevant to NZ. Bring him home to report on things that matter more to us.
