Justin Bieber. The name is synonymous with screaming female fans, to whom sense has left and only passion remains.
It’s something the 18-year-old appreciates.
Speaking to Campbell Live’s John Campbell today in Auckland, Justin was quick to praise his most vocal fans.
“To have that much passion over something or someone is really admirable,” he says. “Each time I hear a fan scream, it’s very special to me. I never take it for granted.’
It’s a lot for a young guy to deal with. Luckily, he seems to have the drive to see him through, describing himself as "blessed" on more than one occasion.
“I love performing. I love my fans. Making music and performing in front of so many people – that’s my passion. There’s always ups and downs to everything, but I wouldn’t change this for the world.”
Even with the paparazzi following his every move?
“They now know where I live, so it’s hard to get away from them, but I guess that comes with the territory. I think that as long as the paparazzi are not aggressive, I let them be. But once they start being aggressive and putting my life in danger, that’s when I’m like, this is not acceptable.”
Justin says Believe – which is the title of his latest album – is a central theme to his life and music. He even got the word tattooed on his arm the day the album came out.
He says with belief comes hope, and he thinks that is a message many of his young fans need to hear.
“Whether you believe in God, whether you believe in yourself or your dreams, it’s just good to believe. It gives people hope.”
Justin says it’s common for fans to tell him stories of how his music helped them get through rough times, and it’s not something he takes lightly. He strives to be genuine with his writing.
He credits his family with keeping his feet on the ground.
“It’s all about just remembering where I come from. My family didn’t have a lot of money. I grew up below the poverty line, and I got to experience the real world. I never thought it was possible for me to be famous, that was never a dream of mine. It seemed impossible – that’s why my whole message now is ‘It happens, and it happened to me, of all people, who comes from a town of 30,000 people’. That just goes to show that anything is possible.”
Humble beginnings for one of the world’s biggest pop stars, who has a strong message for his fans:
“There’s no goal too big. You always just have to go for it, and don’t look back.”
